Exercise in the Treatment of High Cholesterol

Although it will not cause huge changes in cholesterol, exercise - even modest amounts - will help you live longer and feel better!

Exercise will lower total and LDL cholesterol, and is one of the few things that will raise HDL, or "good cholesterol". Exercise also provides many other cardiovascular health benefits, such as reduced clotting, improved heart and blood vessel health, and increased bone strength. We know that people who just take a 30-minute walk three times a week have a measureable reduction in heart attacks and strokes - maybe by as much as 30%! Vigorous aerobic exercise, such as jogging, jazzercise, using a treadmill or exercise bike, etc., is probably best, but even a regularly scheduled brisk walk is very helpful! ("Brisk", by the way, is defined as walking fast enough to make you huff and puff, but not so fast that you can still carry on a conversation if inclined to do so.) Another benefit of regular exercise, is that it lowers blood pressure and greatly reduces the chances of your developing diabetes in future years!
